So, a few years ago, Bryce told me I needed to watch Wait Until Dark, because it was terrifying. (I love scary movies.) I told him I didn't think it could really be that scary, being as old as it was. Bryce called me a bigot, and made me take the movie home to watch.
And it was terrifying. I loved it.
I usually like older films when I see them, especially the scary ones. But I never think that I'll like them. I'm a movie bigot, but I try hard to watch things anyway, in the hopes that I'll someday get over my prejudice.
Drew has become obsessed with zombies this week, after reading the New World of Darkness book rules on zombie apocalypses. (Apocalypse? Apocalypsi?) So last night we watched Night of the Living Dead. My expectations were very low.
Crap, that was a scary movie. I loved it. The more old horror flicks I see, the more I think movies were actually *scarier* back in the 60's than they are now. Apparently Dawn of the Dead is even scarier (and higher quality), and is looming in my viewing future.
After that I want to see Shawn of the Dead, but we don't own that one, so it'll probably be a while.
Happy, Bryce?

If you want any other opinions on zombies, just ask Al - he hearts zombies.
Maine would be a long commute to watch a movie. Sadness.
also (and totally unrelated), i just stomped all over al, my brother, and his wife in a rousing game of munchkin. boom, baby.

Check out Charade (Cary Grant, Audrey Hepburn) for fun!!
ONe thing to keep in mind: the level of gore goes up with every year so (usually) the more recent the Zombie movie the more gory it will be.
Of George Romero's Zombie pics
I thought Night of the Living Dead was great
Dawn of the Dead was really interesting
Day of the Dead was okay (Bub the Zombie was the lone redeeming factor for me) and Land of the Dead was kind of dumb.
I thought the 1990 remake of Night of the Living Dead was pretty good and in keeping with the spirit of what Zombie movies should be. The opening credit sequence to the new Dawn of the Dead was also really good but after a while I was kinda disappointed (I don't really go for turbo-charged-running-at-full-speed-zomb
28 Days Later is another turbo-charged cannibal zombie-ish movie and the use of the high speed camera caused me nausea in the movie theatre (I felt like I had been staring into a strobe light for an hour).
Children Shouldn't Play with Dead Things--I eventually fell asleep watching this one and I don't remember much other than it was like watching an episode of MST3K without the Robots witty commentary.
Return of the Living Dead--I caught this one edited for television and I thought it was funny that the zombies could talk.
Return of the Living Dead 2--I think there was a Michael Jackson zombie in this one
ROTLD 3--Umm, this one was about a zombie girlfriend who is into self mutilation and somehow maintains her humanity even though she's undead. I felt dumber for having watched it.
Zombi 1-5
I think these were made in Italy, they had lots of gore, bad voice dubs, and almost all involve people with terrible haircuts.
The Dead Hate the Living--a film so bad I pretty much just fast fwd'ed to the end and wished I hadn't.
Night of the Creeps--I remember watching this one one on a UHF station late at night with my brother as a kid and liking it. Not your usual zombie movie, this one involved slugs and (I think) aliens.
Brain Dead/Dead Alive--Peter Jackson created this irreverent and funny movie that has one of the grossest endings I've possibly ever seen in a movie. It's alot like Evil Dead 2 only with a lawnmower instead of a chainsaw.
The Last Man on Earth, Omega Man, I am Legend, I am Omega--all involve zombie-ish monsters and are all based off of the same story by Richard Matheson. Vincent Price stars in The Last Man on Earth, Charlton Heston in Omega Man, Will Smith in I am Legend, and the host from Food Network's Iron Chef America is the principal star in I am Omega. Of the four, I am (somewhat) biased towards Vincent Price, but I am sure the Will Smith one has better action sequences. Charlton Heston (as always) is a man of one emotion and I am Omega is pure made-for-tv material.
Shaun of the Dead was perfect for me ( i love comedic horror--like Evil Dead 2 or Waxwork I&II, not Scary Movie). That's about all I can remember from years of wasting my weekends hopped up on caffeinated sodas and watching whatever garbage the local tv network was willing to serve me.
One last thing: The best Zombie book I have ever read is the Zombie Survival Guide. If you don't already own a copy, pick one up! It just might save your life one day. Also, it makes it fun to point out what the characters/directors in any given zombie movie are doing wrong.
