I just got back from a weekend in Denver with Drew and his parents. We went to see Dracula, the ballet. I was very skeptical, because I've never enjoyed ballet. The only ballet I'd ever seen was the Nutcracker (yuck!) so I decided to reserve judgment.
The show was AWESOME! I was riveted the entire time. The dancer who played Dracula was amazing, floating and creeping around the stage. The lighting, music and sets were amazing. The actors stayed in place while the hung sets lifted and rose around them for the scene changes. The dancers who played Mina and Lucy were equally awesome. Sometimes it was hard to see the movement of the dancers under their period costumes, but the costumes themselves moved in ways that added rhythm (or sometimes chaos) to the dance. Drew bought the soundtrack, which makes me happy.
Awesome. I am converted.
On Thursday I also went to a performance of WWJD...a play written by my awesome friend Anna. It was a staged reading, and the actors were very good. The play is about an apartment of roommates, dealing with the fact that Jesus has randomly shown up at their apartment to do their dishes. It makes fun of a lot of Christian stereotypes and cultural stupidity, while at the same time being serious and meaningful. It manages to discuss spiritual topics without being either blasphemous nor schmaltzy, like 99% of all religious drama. I was very, very impressed with Anna's work.
Yay, theater.
